What to see in Isla Canela – Local attractions – Flat In Salt Beds!

This is well and truly on my bucket list!!! I used Castro Marim sea salt at home now I can float in the stuff! There is a quirky spa where you can coat yourself in the salt, have a massage using it or even float in the salt beds directly!

It looks quite tricky to find but it looks like just past Castro Marim, going in the direction of Vila Real de Santo António, on a narrow dirt road that goes to the left, you find the signs to the salt mines of Barquinha . Follow this track and you will find the Salt Spa.

What to see in Isla Canela – Natural attractions – Bird Spotting On Your Ramble

Despite the presence of hotels and apartments in Isla Canela credit must be given to the planners for maintaining a long stretch of dunes with a dense coverage of trees and shrubs along the promenade at Isla Canela, They achieved this by creating a border of lawns and palm trees next to the promenade bordered by a long fence on the edge of the dunes. They then built long board walkways to the beach.

The result is an area which is attractive to resident and migrating birds. The dunes are still in great shape and generally large areas left undisturbed by human interference.

Take a stroll and see what you can spot.

In September flamingos can be spotted in Isla Canela. You can try looking in the marshland behind Punta Moral if you would like to find a flock. You will need your walking boots and a bit of determination.

One of the best viewpoints is from the road to Ayamonte just west of the Iberostar Hotel. Walk west, beyond the roundabout and find a dirt track on your right. Follow your nose till the dirt track briefly turns into a tarmac road. There were a flock of 56 here last year!!
