WRINKLY
REPORT ON
HOLIDAY
TO
ISLA CANELA
12th MAY 2005 TO 19th MAY 2005
The
Wrinkly party set off for
Manchester Airport in
three separate Tyson taxi loads at 12 noon on a very sunny day but cool.
The
captain informed us the journey would take approx. 2hours 20 mins so we
settled down to enjoy the trip. The meal on board was acceptable but I
was not overly impressed. Time passed quite quickly and we were soon
landing at Faro airport.
The
first evening was spent in the nearby hotel bar which was comfortable
but pricey. We would have to get our “bar blood hound” Brian
on the trail of a local bar for the rest of the stay.
The first lazy day started around the
pool on the sun beds. At
first it was a bit overcast then the sun arrived and it became much
hotter. This lasted about 15 minutes but it seemed to be the start of a
pattern of sun and showers setting in for the rest of the day.
Eventually though we gave up the, now sodden, sun beds and returned to
the bar for drinks. After
this short repose a group of us decided to set off to walk along the
promenade. The walkway was
beautifully laid and we saw plenty of new hotels and apartment
complexes. After a while though, still recovering from yesterday, we
gave up and turned back. I must add that a few hardy members carried on
heading for the
Marina
.
On our way out we had spotted a small bar just across the promenade. It
was called Ja’s Bar and
Restaurant so we called in for a drink. It transpired through
conversation with the waiter that it was a Liverpool
couple who owned the bar and Manageress,
Jackie, was also from
Liverpool
. This was to prove an excellent venue over the following week. Jackie
especially, and assisted by waiter/nephew David,
couldn’t do enough to please and entered into the spirit of Wesham Wrinklys. Ah well,
the weather changed again and we ended up inside the bar chatting to the
staff.
This
evening was to be our first “official” evening meal which was to set
the tone for the rest of the week. After which we had all decided to
return to JA’s bar for the evening. We decided to sit outside on the sea
terrace and re-arrange the tables to suit our party.
Monday
The trip to Seville.
The weather today was overcast and the forecast wasn’t giving out much
hope of anything else except sun and showers. Still, it was a chance to
see a beautiful city so we were all still in good spirits.
John had arranged a
coach to take us there. It was going to cost us €15
each plus €13 for a city
tour bus as against €51 on
the offical tour – well done Boss
Wrinkly, you pulled off another great deal. We thought we were
getting the non-English speaking driver from the race day but,
fortunately for us we had a German, lady driver, named Gabby
who spoke really good
English.
She dropped us off in the city with the understanding to pick us
up at 4 p.m. (Remember Barcelona
John????) This time though we had her mobile phone number – just
in case!!

The
first thing most of us did was to take an hour’s bus tour round the
city. It covered quite a lot
but you would have to spend a lot longer than we did to explore the city
thoroughly. During the trip we passed the World
Expo Exhibition site of 1992
and were saddened to see how it had been left to deteriorate. If they
had just kept it serviceable it would have been more acceptable. During
the trip the rain started but it wasn’t until near the end. Open top
buses and rain don’t mix!! The streets were lined with ‘Jac-o-Lander’
trees (I think I’ve spelt that correctly but, if I haven’t I
know someone who will). They looked very elegant. As we left the bus, we
rushed to find a small bar or café to have a drink and a bite to eat
hoping for the rain to pass.

After
lunch the sun had come out again and so party set off to walk round and
explore the city. Dorothy was
in our party and had been admiring Spanish
aprons which looked like Flamenco
dresses. As it was her birthday on the Wednesday,
Pam and I decided to buy her
one. First we had to make sure Dorothy
was not around so Janet
kept a watch for us. We’re a sneaky lot when we have to be!
The
next day most of the morning was spent sunbathing for the last time and
it really was a hot one. We lunched at
Ja’s Bar for the last
time. Time passed quickly and we were back at the side of the pool for
the last top-up tan and putting the world to rights with conversation. Janet
wasn’t feeling too good at this point and thought she had a chill
from going in the pool too much. Peter
couldn’t resist taking a photo of her in an outside jacket in the
hot sun. I am pleased to say she is very much better now.
Bye
for now and thanks Wrinklys
for your company and a lovely holiday.
